Bad English

One of my pet hates is the terrible use of English you see and hear these days.

There seem to be many people under the impression that the word “those” does not exist, and that “them” should be used in its place. For example: “them people over there”. That probably annoys my dad even more than it does me.

Commonly confused (and misused) words:

  • their, there, they’re
  • your, you’re
  • now, know, no
  • it’s, its
  • whose, who’s
  • right, write
  • then, than
  • lose, loose
  • accept, except
  • affect, effect

Learn the differences between each one… I beg of you.

Another thing that annoys me is apostrophe abuse. This poor little punctuation mark is supposed to denote possessiveness or contractions – NOT PLURALS. The plural of logo is logos not logo’s etc (the plural of lego is lego ;)). I can understand how some apostrophe use can be confusing, for example “its” is a possessive but you don’t use an apostrophe there, otherwise it becomes a contraction of “it is”.

Also when you contract 2 words you put the apostrophe where letters have been removed, not between the words… a good example of where people go wrong is “is’nt”… it’s supposed to be “isn’t”.

How about the prevalent use of double negatives? “I ain’t seen no one”. Well have you seen anyone or not? I can’t tell if you’re being stupid or actually haven’t seen anyone. Some rap songs these days seem to manage triple negatives! “I ain’t never seen no one”.

Now, before I get any comments about any possible errors I have made in this post (Bonita I’m looking at you ;)) my use of the English Language isn’t perfect by any means, but the way things are going I seem to be in a minority – I respect the language and try my utmost to write things correctly. It’s just a shame to see some people abusing it so badly, without even realising.

Update: I found on the alphaDictionary website a list of the commonly misspelled and mispronounced words in English. Makes for interesting reading.

Hottub Party Pics

I’ve noticed a few people searching for #Hottub photos, so here’s the URL to the Gallery:

SideBlog

I’ve finally added my SideBlog to the sidebar, and it displays the last 5 entries. You can browse the archives via the link up top.

I’ve also removed my ShoutBox, since there isn’t really enough space for it any more. The sidebar would just be huge with it included. I’ve not yet decided what I’m going to do with it.

One idea I’ve had is to put it on its own page, making it bigger so it fills most of the content area, there’s definitely space on the nav bar since I removed the Subscription link as no one uses it and I don’t really plan to use notifications much either.

Update: Tried that, it sucked. I might just get rid of the ShoutBox altogether.

New Banner

The eagle-eyed amongst you might notice a few changes up above… yes, I’ve changed the background image on my blog. Actually it’s now 5 images, which change between the sections. A nifty bit of CSS makes that happen which is cool.

I may change the images in due course but for now, I rather like the selection I have. 🙂

Impressions

A girl goes into the doctor’s office for a checkup. As she takes off her blouse, he notices a red “H” on her chest. “How did you get that mark on your chest?” asks the doctor.

“Oh, my boyfriend went to Harvard and he’s so proud of it that he never takes off his Harvard sweatshirt, even when we make love,” she replies. “I guess it just leaves an impression.”

A couple of days later, another girl comes in for a checkup. As she takes off her blouse, he notices a blue “Y” on her chest. “How did you get that mark on your chest?” asks the doctor.

“Oh, my boyfriend went to Yale and he’s so proud of it that he never takes off his Yale sweatshirt, even when we make love,” she replies.

A couple of days later, another girl comes in for a checkup. As she takes off her blouse, he notices a green “M” on her chest. “Do you have a boyfriend at Michigan?” asks the doctor.

“No, but I have a girlfriend at Wisconsin. Why do you ask?”

Revenge Of The Sith

I just this minute got back from seeing a late showing at the cinema… and by god is this movie fucking amazing.

It definitely makes up for the lacklustre Episodes I and II, and wraps up the entire 6 parts into a neat little package.

Lightsaber fights aplenty, tons of action, and fantastic special effects – this is by far the best of the first three movies. I enjoyed every single second.

If you liked 4, 5 and 6 definitely go see this movie, and if you weren’t impressed with 1 or 2, GO SEE THIS MOVIE.

I might just have to go watch it all again.
