Holiday Imminent!

I’m going on holiday tomorrow! I leave at 8am for the airport and my flight’s just before noon. I can’t wait! I think I have everything I’ll need packed, just a few things to stick in my case tomorrow morning like my wash bag and another towel. Knowing me I’ll be rushing around like a headless chicken in the morning suddenly remembering things I need to pack.

Last night my computer died… I’m not sure what the hell happened but I started to get a whole load of garbled graphics then everything froze. 10 seconds later my monitor switched into power save. Without being able to see my desktop any more, and not knowing if the PC had locked up or not, I had to flick the power switch on the back of my PSU to turn the computer off.

To check that it wasn’t my KVM I plugged the screen and keyboard into my PC directly and turned it on again. I didn’t even get as far as the desktop, it crashed on the XP logo during boot up.

I think that my video card has died. It doesn’t look to me like it could be the monitor, as the computer should still work if the screen goes kaput. This is terrible timing, I’m going to be on holiday for the next 2 weeks and it’ll be sitting there waiting for me to get home and fix it. I really didn’t want to have to buy a brand new card until my next major upgrade – especially since my PC uses AGP and my next PC would have PCI-Express which replaces it.

Oh well… I’ll have to wait 2 weeks and check my video card properly. *sigh*

Batman Begins

Best. Batman. Ever.

Christian Bale more than pulled off the part, beating Keaton (previously my favourite Batman) into submission.

Let’s forget Batman Forever and Batman And Robin ever happened. Returning to the dark gothic Gotham from the first 2 movies (and much closer to the comics I might add), not the lame pantomine of the other two – No Riddler, no Mr Freeze, no Robin… I cannot recommend this movie highly enough .

My faith in the Batman franchise is restored.

Plumber Takes Leak

A plumber from West Hoathly took a leak into a vase and poured it into the hot water tank – how disgusting. What’s worse is that we had this same guy in OUR house a while ago, to try to fix our shower. He wanted to charge us £1000! We got a second opinion, which came to just £50 plus parts (that only needed replacing because the first plumber damaged it).

He blames the sound of running water and bright lights, thankfully he was caught on camera this time, but has he done it in other houses?

KDC Certificate Problem

I kept seeing an Event ID 20 in my Exchange Server’s system event log with the following message:

“The currently selected KDC certificate was once valid, but now is invalid and no suitable replacement was found. Smartcard logon may not function correctly if this problem is not remedied. Have the system administrator check on the state of the domain’s public key infrastructure. The chain status is in the error data.”

If an Active Directory CA was removed, Domain Controllers will display this error until they get a new certificate from a different CA. This is usually fixed by running “certutil -dcinfo deleteBad” to remove the offending certificates.

T-Shirt Design

On the ChavScum website they sell a t-shirt that says “Happy Slap Me And I’ll Happily Slap You Back”, I didn’t think that was a strong enough message so here’s my version:

Pimp My CMS

One new feature in Movable Type is the ability to specify Alternative Templates for your administrative area. This means that you can modify the templates that make up the “look” of your MT back-end without fear that the next time you upgrade you’ll overwrite all your hard work (it’s happened a few times with me, I know how frustrating that can be).

With a simple addition to your mt.cfg MT will look in a new location first for changed templates (and if it doesn’t find one, it’ll use the default one).

The other thing you can do is change the CSS in styles.css, so you can not only fiddle with what’s displayed you can change the entire layout and colour scheme!

Six Apart published an article on both these methods just a few days ago.

There are a few good examples of what you can do by changing the CSS over on Flickr. A good starting point I think you’ll agree.

I’ve taken some of the better ideas from those screenshots to put together my own interface design, and I’m pretty happy with it so far. Check out the Templates page shown in the picture below. 🙂
