Google Toolbar New Tab Page

If you are using version 5 of the Google Toolbar for Firefox then you might be aware of a new feature similar to the speed dial function in Opera or Google Chrome’s start page, known as the new tab page.

There are quite a few other addons that will interfere with the option to use the new tab page, some of which replicate similar functions, a non-comprehensive list of these are:

– Auto Dial
– Auto Dial 3D
– Bookmarks Tab
– Fast Dial
– New Tab JumpStart
– NewTabURL
– Speed Dial
– Tab Mix Plus

If you would prefer to use Google’s page instead of a separate addon, simply disable the offending addon.

It is possible to use the new tab page and Tab Mix Plus however.

Go into the Tab Mix Plus options and under Events, Tab Opening, change

“Load on new tabs” to “User Location” and put this in the location

You can also put this location into the URL box in NewTabURL’s options.

There is more information relating to this issue in the Google Toolbar support forum.

Custom Gmail Themes

For a little while now you’ve been able to choose from a selection of various themes, but now you can choose your own colours. There isn’t a huge amount of customisation, no background image options as far as I can see, but it’s certainly a start! I’d rather like the option to edit the existing themes, so hopefully they’ll add that eventually.

And this news is pretty awesome too:

Companies that use Google Apps won’t see the options for themes yet, but we’re working on getting themes to you too.

I’ve wanted to use my GApps account instead of Gmail for a while now, but the lack of themes really has held me back. I love the themes in Gmail, the standard one is so boring, and corporate. 😉

UPDATE: Themes are live on GAFYD accounts at last!

FeedBurner Issue

FeedBurner are in the midst of changing all their users over to the Google platform and I’ve had to update the CNAME that points to their service from

Unfortunately, there is a bit of an issue and my feed is currently unavailable but I am working on getting it back up and running again.

UPDATE: I have changed the CNAME back to the old FeedBurner URL, I need to migrate my account to Google and there’s no link to do so. Other people are having the same issue. Once the link reappears and I start the migration then I can fiddle with the CNAME setting again, and hopefully not break it again.

UPDATE 2: Some kind soul posted the URL you need to click on to migrate your FeedBurner account to Google, as it’s still not appearing on my FB page, so I was finally able to get my account and feeds transferred over. I have now updated the CNAME (again) so MyBrand should still work.

Windows Photo Gallery

In Vista, when you click on a JPG, PNG or BMP file, the Windows Photo Gallery is the default viewer. This is the updated version of XP’s Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Not entirely sure why it doesn’t open GIFs, but that’s another story.

I had noticed on my install of Vista Ultimate 32-bit that it had just ceased to work, it would open the program but not display any images. I had searched around for an answer but nothing jumped out at me. So I just installed Irfanview and ignored it.

Now skip forward a few months and I’ve just installed the 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate, and the same problem had appeared. So I really wanted to track down what the heck is going on. And I finally found my answer.

The whole problem is caused by my monitor’s colour profile.

If you ever have the same problem, you need to remove the assigned colour profile.

  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Click Classic View on the left.
  • Open Color Management.
  • Tick Use my settings for this device.
  • Select the current colour profile, and click remove.
  • Click Close.
  • Reboot.

Now your Photo Gallery should display images again.
