Generation Kill – The Killer Elite

I’ve been watching the HBO mini-series Generation Kill recently, based on journalist Evan Wright’s experiences in Iraq travelling with 1st Recon Battalion of the US Marine Corps. It’s a very interesting look into the mindset and lives of a Marine unit during a time of war. It’s a shame that it’s only 7 episodes long, with 1 left to air, as it really is quite gripping.

I started reading The Killer Elite, Wright’s 3-part article on the Rolling Stone website, on which the book and later the TV series were based. It just goes to show just how close to the original story the TV series has stayed, only a few minor details changed here and there.

If you get a chance to watch the TV show, I highly recommend it.

Formula One Returns To The BBC!

After 12 years of it being on ITV with bloody adverts throughout, F1 returns to its rightful home of BBC1. I really hope they bring back the old theme tune of The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, to me that is the sound of F1 on TV, it’s what I grew up with – and it’s been sorely missed!!

Cloverfield

I went to see Cloverfield last night, and absolutely loved it.

As many people will already know, it’s filmed as if it’s on a hand-held camcorder held by one of the cast – mostly by a guy called Hud; and it keeps flicking between the events of the night in question and what was previously recorded on the tape in the camera.

There was a warning on the door to the screen likening the effects of the jerky filming to those you’d get on a roller-coaster, and although there have been reports of some people puking from motion sickness, I never once felt in the slightest bit ill.

The way it was filmed really lent itself to this type of movie, you never really see what is going on or what the monster looks like all in one go till much later in the film, and only right at the end do you actually get the best view of it. This all works in keeping the audience in suspense, and never quite holding all the facts.

You never really see where the monster comes from, or what happens to it at the end, the camera isn’t pointed the right way so it leaves it up to your imagination – although there is a slight clue right at the end of the credits (you’re better off looking it up on YouTube than actually waiting to hear it yourself), and there is already talk of a sequel.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of Cloverfield and I highly recommend you go see in a cinema – do not download a crappy pirated version, you will miss out on the “experience”.

The Dark Knight Trailer

Finally, the official trailer is out! Unfortunately we still have to wait until July before it opens in cinemas. I simply cannot wait, I have been looking forward to a sequel to Batman Begins from the moment the end credits on the first movie rolled. Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan have breathed new life into an ailing franchise totally ruined by George Clooney’s nipples. Heath Ledger looks awesome as the new Joker, I was worried that he’d just not be able to pull it off, after the masterful performance that Jack Nicholson did in the original Batman movie.

Hopefully the trailer will stay up on YouTube for a while, quite a few copies have been taken down already!

Or just go and watch it at the official site where you can download it in 3 varying qualities.

Saw IV

Just got back from the cinema to see Saw IV. Another excellent episode in the ever-continuing story of Jigsaw. There was a fantastic twist at the end, one I didn’t see coming at all! That’s all I’m going to say on that matter.

If you a fan of the first 3, you have to go see this one. Go now!

By the way, there are at least another 2 films in the pipeline.

UPDATE: Saw VI reigned supreme at the US box office on its opening weekend by pulling in a staggering $31 million. The movie coming in 2nd place only managed $12 million in comparison.
